Wikispaces.png to TeachersFirst: Wiki Walk-Through, "A wiki is a web site that lets any visitor become a participant: you can create or edit the actual site contents without any special technical knowledge or tools. All you need is a computer with an Internet connection. A wiki is continuously 'under revision.' It is a living collaboration whose purpose is the sharing of the creative process and product by many. One famous example is Wiki-pedia, an online encyclopedia with no 'authors' but millions of contributors and editors. The word 'wiki' comes from Hawaiian language, meaning 'quick' or 'fast.' " Wikis are used by families, colleges, museums, and businesses to collaborate as a group on a common project. Teachers and students can use wikis to share information and create an archive of their learning. To create a wiki for your students to use,

  1. go to
  2. Create an account
    1. You will choose a username, password
    2. Enter your school email address
    3. Choose a wiki name
    4. Select either a protected wiki (everyone can view pages, only wiki members can edit them) or a private wiki (only wiki members can view and edit pages)
    5. Check the box that certifies you will use the wiki for educational purposes
    6. Click "Join"

Once you have joined the wikispaces, you can create your wiki. You will receive an email from wikispaces with instructions and tips for how to set up your wiki. To have students join the wiki, simply provide them with the url of the wiki and instruct them to click on "Join Now". Students will then create their own accounts (tell them they do not have to create a wiki to create an account). You will receive an email asking you to approve the membership of the students. Once students have joined the wiki, they can add text, images, videos, and documents. Your class can also have discussions on the wiki under the discussion tab.
